Wholesale Jewelry The Internet And Califonia Proposition Sixty Five
I was looking for wholesale jewelry on the internet recently and I came across a website that had a California proposition 65 warning. It stated the warning was in compliance with the proposition requirement and that some of their items might have lead in them. And that some of their jewelry might have chemicals that may cause cancer or reproductive harm like birth defects.
I am warned to even wash my hands after touching the jewelry. Infants and small children are to be kept away from the jewelry. And if you see anyone sucking or eating the jewelry you better tell them to stop. Who wants a cancer causing agent in their mouth?
Do I want to give away gifts that come with such a warning however? If I do give jewelry in California do I have to make sure the tag listing the warnings are included. Do I have to verbally warn people of the hazard? Do I have to tell them to wash their hands after opening and handling my gift?
Now California proposition 65 applies to retailers in California. Does this mean that if I buy the same type of jewelry in Arizona that the jewelry there does not have the cancer causing agents nor does it mean that retailers do not have to warn of the cancer causing agents? I think it is the latter. Jewelry is jewelry and if the industry has been using lead to create jewelry all this time I doubt if somehow California is the only state where you can find jewelry with cancer causing agents.
Does anyone pay attention to these warnings? Do you pay attention to such warnings? If I gave you a wrist bracelet for Christmas with a California 65 tag on it would you not accept it, if you liked the bracelet? Chances are you would wear the bracelet.
How does jewelry cause cancer anyway? Does California have a unique testing system other states do not have? Or do the other states have the same information but they simply let their population take their chances on getting sick?
Jewelry has been manufactured the same for centuries. And lead has been part of that process for centuries. Has anyone gotten cancer for wearing lead around their necks? Or their wrists or on their ears for that matter? Who can say for sure? If it was not for proposition 65 in California however no one would give it a second thought. But at least customers can decide for themselves. If they want to wash their hands after wearing their jewelry that is up to them.
If you are giving jewelry this year as a gift you too can decide if that is the right gift to give. You can even warn people you give it to if you like. All of this I learned by shopping on the internet for wholesale jewelry.
